Are England ‘coming good’ under Moores? Or are New Zealand rubbish? The Tourists’ started the day 176 ahead and ended it with a lead of 501, 5 wickets remaining and 2 days left. Even England cannot fail to win from this position…! The inability of the top order to make hundreds was forgotten as Strauss and Bell made it into three figures and went a long way to securing their places in the team for the forthcoming series against…. New Zealand.
Vettori got KP for 34 before Bell & Strauss put on 187. Bell & Collingwood have both gone but Strauss remains unbeaten on 173. If England are to continue batting in the morning, they will presumably have the sense to stop once Strauss gets to 200; if they are not confident of defending 500+, God help them.
Given that England were - barring a horrendous collapse - almost certain to win the game before the day started, the biggest news is that Strauss and Bell have cemented their places in the side. This puts a little more pressure on Collingwood - who has more than earnt his place in the side - but when the selectors want to blood a young batsman, it could be the Durham man who pays.

England look like batting until they’re all out. Probably not too far away.
