India level series

The title of ‘2nd best team in the world’  stays with India after a one all draw with South Africa in the three Test series.  India won the third and final match with some fine bowling and a helpful batting collapse from the Tourists.  Even on a difficult pitch, scores of 265 and 121 are rarely going to win a Test Match and South Africa’s bowlers simply couldn’t defend those.  India cruised home with 8 wickets to spare.  In the words of the omni-popular SA skipper Graeme Smith:

“India were clinical throughout and they deserved their victory.”

Harbhajan won the Man of the Series award after taking 19 wickets, though the shocking nature of the pitch was highlighted by two thingys: 1. Ganguly got Man of the Match for scoring 87! and 2. The ICC will investigate the pitch after complaints from the South African coach Mickey Arthur (he called it “a poor cricket wicket” - perhaps that’s why his team played poor cricket on it. HONK!)

Meanwhile, everybody’s favourite humble sportsman Ricky Ponting has suggested that either India or South Africa could catch Australia as World number one in the next couple of years.  Hope springs eternal, Richard.
