Vaughan steps down

August 3rd, 2008 · 4 Comments

Michael Vaughan has stepped down as England captain following the series defeat to South Africa and a poor run of form with the bat.  He said “It’s the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make but also the easiest. I have put my heart and soul into the job. I hope this decision will prolong my career. My body is working well but my mind is not working as well at the moment.”  Paul Collingwood has also stood down as ODI captain.

Vaughan will take a break from cricket; he will not be available for the 4th Test at the Oval this week.  His record as Test Captain is very impressive - 26 wins, 14 draws, 11 defeats but form has slipped recently.  It is a tough job for someone to follow and all eyes are already on the home Ashes series next year.  After a year in the job (of coach) perhaps the real work begins for Peter Moores now too as he gets to mould his own side.

KP strong favourite. That’ll be interesting. No mention of an outside challenge from Monty yet…

‘Cloves’ is surely too busy in a power struggle with Golds Jnr. at Shephalbury.
