During the fourth day of this Test Match the upper hand was passed back and forth. Morkel removed Ambrose with his 2nd ball of the day putting South Africa in charge; a half century partnership between Collingwood and Sidebottom gave England real hope before the traditional English collapse. The Tourists needed 281 to win.
South Africa were cruising towards this before the 1st wicket fell at 65. at 93-4 England were jubilant. 171-5 and England were within touching distance but that was as close as they would get. Smith and Boucher saw the game through, taking the extra half hour available to wrap up a series victory on the day. Smith’s innings was rightly rewarded with the man of the match award. He scored 154 out of 283-5. The South Africans have proved much too strong for England, for whom there has already been some serious soul searching.
