Sledging: Valid part of the game or ‘just not cricket’?

January 14th, 2008 · 1 Comment

The row between Symonds and Harbhajan that became the war between Australia and India has provoked further debate on the subject of sledging.  Is it, as we at Pie Chucker believe, all part of the challenge of the game?  Or is it against the very spirit of cricket? New Zealand Paper the Southland Times take the moral high ground (sledging is bad & the Aussies are the worst) whilst the Guardian takes on the more tricky debate of racismand cultural sensitivity within any given sledge.  The BBC’s 606 Board also gets to grips with the ‘culturally offensive’ thing.  Meanwhile Russian Ice Hockey players skip the sledging and just kick the Australia out of each other.

Some of cricket’s finest sledges (well, the first ones that came up on google if we’re honest):

  • Daryll Cullinan and Shane Warne:As Cullinan was on his way to the wicket, Warne told him he had Been waiting 2 years for another chance to humiliate him. “Looks like you spent it eating,” Cullinan retorted
  • James Ormond had just come out to bat on an Ashes tour and was greeted by Mark Waugh……. MW : “F*** me, look who it is. Mate, what are you doing out here, there’s no way you’re good enough to play for England” JO : “Maybe not, but at least i’m the best player in my family”
  • Glenn McGrath v Eddo Brandes
McGrath was bowling to the Zimbabwe number 11 - who was unable to get his bat anywhere near the ball.

McGrath, frustrated that Brandes was still at the crease, wandered up during one particular over and inquired: “Why are you so fat?”

Quick as a flash, Brandes replied: “Because every time I make love to your wife, she gives me a biscuit.”

Funny how Gilchrist and Symonds actually damaged their team’s chances by scoring so quickly then blazing out. Just when taking time out of the game was needed they let India bowl em out in 50 overs.

And, seduced by Perth, Aussies haven’t picked Hogg - but have to face Kumble in the 4th innings. C’mon India don’t bum this up!!!
